Grandparent-Grandchild Travel Predicted to Shape Asia’s Tourism in 2026

A new wave of travel trends is emerging across Asia in 2026, with “skip-generation” vacations, trips shared by grandparents and grandchildren, becoming one of the most distinctive. According to Hilton’s 2026 Travel Trends Report, this form of travel is gaining momentum across the region, redefining family connections through meaningful shared experiences.

Driven by a growing desire for bonding and authentic exploration, skip-generation holidays bring together two generations while parents often stay behind. Six in ten respondents across Asia (60%) have already taken or are planning such a trip, with the highest interest seen in China (86%) and India (79%). This shift reflects how families are finding new ways to strengthen relationships through travel.

The motivation behind skip-generation travel lies in the wish to create deeper and more memorable experiences. Around 58% of families in the Asia-Pacific region cited this as their main reason, particularly in India (67%), Australia (64%), and New Zealand (63%). In Japan, nearly half of families (47%) and 50% of senior travelers said their goal was to try something new, emphasizing the emotional and experiential appeal of this trend.

Skip-generation vacations are also evolving into wellness-oriented journeys. Nearly 89% of travelers believe that traveling with family improves grandparents’ health. For older travelers, quality time with grandchildren remains the most cherished part of the trip. These journeys often feature tailored wellness amenities, nutritious dining, and senior-friendly services.

Beyond relaxation, families are also drawn to culinary exploration (69%) and visits to historical and cultural landmarks (63%), underscoring a growing appetite for educational and inspiring experiences.

As skip-generation travel becomes a defining trend of 2026, hotels and tour operators are expected to design more inclusive, multi-generational offerings—creating opportunities for families to reconnect, rejuvenate, and rediscover the joy of travel together.
